England U20s Squad Named for Novermber Matches
Head coach Keith Downing has selected a 23-player group that will first travel to Agueda to play Portugal on Thursday 14 November (4pm WET KO).
The Young Lions will then take on Iceland U21s at Wycombe Wanderers’ Adams Park on Tuesday 19 November (7pm GMT KO).
Downing has handed a first international call-up to Newcastle United midfielder Matthew Longstaff and West Ham goalkeeper Joseph Anang, while there’s a return to action for Arsenal’s Emile Smith-Rowe who missed the first two camps through injury. There’s also a return to international football for Stoke City striker Tyrese Campbell, who has previously been capped at U16 and U17 level.
Keith Downing: “We’ve got a consistent squad, but welcoming two new faces in Tyrese Campbell and Matty Longstaff, who are both playing very well for club, and some returns from injury for these games.
“We’ve also seen Conor Gallagher progress up into the U21s, which is great news and ultimately the purpose of this squad. We’ve got a programme of games throughout the season to help drive their international development and hopefully get a number of these players in the U21s EURO squad in 2021.
“Portugal are notorious for producing really good young players and have a real pedigree in youth football. This group reached the final of last year’s U19s EURO so this will be a very good rest for our players. We’re very pleased to be welcoming Iceland’s U21s to Wycombe. It’s a great chance for our squad to challenge themselves against an older age group and one that is doing well in their EURO qualifying campaign.
“We’re looking for our players to perform well consistently in an England shirt and get in the habit of winning as part of their development, so they can produce in tournament football across the age groups up to senior level.”
Tickets are available for England v Iceland priced £1 for children and over-65s, £5 for adults and can be bought via http://tickets.wwfc.com
