A grassroots football pitch and goal

Do you know a Green Hero?

New award celebrates innovation and leadership in sustainability within the grassroots football community.

Have you nominated in this year's Berks & Bucks FA Grassroots Awards yet?

To further recognise and reward our volunteer workforce, this season we are providing more opportunities for people to recognise the efforts of their peers, clubs and leagues by introducing two new categories into our annual awards programme; EDI Champion of the Year and Green Leadership Award.

The Green Leadership Award has been introduced to celebrate innovation and leadership in sustainability within the grassroots football community.

As climate change continues to have a greater impact on our local environment, football is not immune. Approximately one third of grassroots pitches across the country lose six to eight weekends of fixtures each season due to flooding.  It is clear that the football community has a responsibility to contribute to the global efforts to reduce the impacts of climate change through meaningful action and education.

The new award, which will form part of the annual Grassroots Football Awards, will recognise those Clubs, Leagues or individuals within the County who have shown leadership in tackling the climate crisis and improving environmental sustainability within the grassroots football community.

Fiona Hyde, Sustainability Director for Berks & Bucks FA, said: “I am delighted to support the creation of this new award category in the Grassroots Football Awards by Bucks and Berks FA as implementing environmental sustainability initiatives becomes more important in the response to climate change challenges across all sectors, including sport and football. I look forward to seeing the nominations for this category as I am aware of some initiatives taking place across the County and know there will be many more people making positive changes.”

The selection criteria for the new award and the link to nominate is below:

We are looking for an individual, Team, Club or League who has implemented an initiative that works to reduce the environmental impact of grassroots football.

Small or large, every action counts; so whether it's rolling out an awareness campaign, reducing single use plastics, or installing solar panels on the clubhouse roof we want to hear about the action being taken across the County.

You will need to demonstrate how your initiative has helped you reduce your environmental footprint and/or raised the awareness of sustainability within your Club/League or local community.

Nominations for the Berks & Bucks FA Awards are open until 21st April 2024.
