A History of the Cup...
The first Berks & Bucks FA Senior Cup competition dates back to 1878-79 season when Reading FC met Marlow FC in the Final held at Reading Cricket Ground.
Having seen off Wallingford 1-0 in the first round, Reading, still an amateur club at the time, went on to beat Maidenhead by “three to love” in the second before beating Marlow 1-0 in the Final.
The Reading Chronicle of March 27th 1879 reported on the first ever Berks & Bucks FA Senior Cup, then known as the ‘Challenge Cup’, as follows:
“Neither side gained a point, it was decided to play for another half-hour. A few minutes from time, Morgan, from a magnificent corner-kick, created a scrimmage near the goal, which resulted in Reading, amid loud cheering, obtaining a goal.”
