Introducing Jon Wood, our Football Development Officer for Vale of White Horse and South Oxfordshire. Jon also leads on inclusion and disability.

A born and bred Reading boy, I started playing football at a very early age, and since then sport has always been a part of my life. Despite never really making the grade as a footballer I had a few highlights such as; playing in the National Schools Final at the old Wembley and representing the County. However that didn’t stop me getting involved in as much football as possible from organising events and coaching to collecting stickers and World Cup doubles!

I completed my Sport Development and Business Management degree in 2008, which cemented my desire to forge a career in sport. Just as important as the knowledge I took away from my course was the links I made and the voluntary work I undertook during my time at University. This allowed me to take may my first into Sport Development Position as an Active Parks Manager. The role involved delivering a project encouraging more people to take part in sport and physical activity in their local parks and open spaces.

I moved to the Berks & Bucks FA in 2011 as maternity cover, and was offered a full-time role in June 2012. I love the job and the variety of projects that we are able to get involved in and deliver on. Currently I am responsible for the South Oxon/VOWH part of the County, and look after all of the Inclusion work that we do Countywide such as disability football. Working in disability football is up there with some of the most rewarding things I have ever been involved in. To be able to provide individuals, many of whom may have thought they would never be able to play football, the opportunity to not only play, but be part of a club taking part in a League is a pretty amazing. Seeing the joy that it brings them, and the parents, make all those late evenings and weekends worthwhile!

In my spare time, I still enjoy playing sport socially and keep myself pretty active. This year I have set myself the target of running the Paris marathon. I’ve previously run 3 half marathons, and if I am being honest didn’t feel particularly great after any of them! But it’s a challenge and that is something I am always up for.
