GLL to provide further Walking Football provision in Berks and Bucks

We are pleased to announce that four Walking Football festivals will be delivered annually at GLL sites across the Berks & Bucks area.

The Walking Football festivals will be used to promote local sessions to new participants, as well as provide friendly games for existing sessions to participate in. The festivals will be open to all abilities, with food and drink available to attendees providing a very social feel.

GLL have been delivering Walking Football across Berkshire, Buckinghamshire & Oxfordshire for over 18 months, and now have 9 weekly sessions established within their leisure centres. Colin Williams, Community Sports Manager for South Oxfordshire, explained; “We are delighted to be able to offer an annual calendar of social Walking Football across Berks and Bucks. We have seen the popularity of our sessions grow considerably over the past year and its impacts range from giving older people the opportunity to engage in regular physical activity, reducing social isolation and supporting with players’ mental health. We look forward to working in partnership with the Berks and Bucks FA to grow these sessions even more.”

Jon Wood BBFA Innovation Manager commented; “This is another great addition to the provision of Walking Football in Berks & Bucks, offering participants the chance to take part in festivals in a less competitive environment. GLL have always put on well organised events, and by committing to the delivery of four festivals a year give those interested a regular opportunity to get involved. We look forward to the running of these events and supporting the development of this moving forward.”

Walking Football is a format of football that is aimed at encouraging older adults to play football on a regular basis. It comprises of the similar rules to standard football, except participants are not permitted to run. As a result the game relies less on physical attributes, reducing the stress on joints and muscles.
