Wiltshire [1] v [2] Berks & Bucks

Berks&Bucks were forced to make changes for this match, due to unavailability, and injury to Ben Murphy{Goalkeeper} in the last match {Dorset}.The pitch this match was played on at Supermarine, was maximum size and was very hard and bumpy- and would need a lot of skill and fitness, to get a result.

Both sides found it difficult to play any flowing football, with the pitch producing uneven bounce, and passes failing to reach their intended targets. Berks&Bucks, started to put pressure on the Wiltshire defence, but could not  produce any testing shots at the Wiltshire goal. The back line of the visitors defence looked very solid and had little difficulty dealing with any potential Wiltshire attack. Half time was reached, neither side being able to take the lead.

Early into the second half , after Berks&Bucks had rattled a Wiltshire “Upright” Wilshire  broke away down their left flank and produced a low cross into the visitors goal area – this was first gathered by the erks&Bucks keeper- who then allowed the ball to spill from his grasp, and then into the net to put Wiltshire 1-0 up.

From this unfortunate event Berks&Bucks replied within  two minutes to draw level. Marcus Browne who up to this point had given the Wiltshire defence a torrid time gathered the ball and went on a solo run- and produced a telling shot passed the Wiltshire goalkeeper. This quick reply to Wiltshire’s goal –gave Berks&Bucks the spur they needed. The visitors attacks were now coming at pace, and putting the home defence under pressure. After his mistake- the Berks&Bucks keeper Daniel Kelly was looking alert –and coming out to the edge of his area smartly to snub out any Wiltshire danger. As the game progressed it looked as though a draw might be the outcome of this match. Due to both sides giving their “all” on a big pitch and telling conditions their were a lot of tired legs trying not to make any mistakes. Unfortunately it was Wiltshire who made the mistake, when slack marking allowed Berks &Bucks to score and go 1-2 up. The final few minutes were played out-without any further score. After producing the third win on the trot,

Berks &Bucks- if they beat Hampshire in their last match- will put themselves into the mix with other Counties for the Championship.

The Championship has opened up – due to Oxfordshire loosing their last two matches.

DORSET U16 [1]v BERKS & BUCKS U16 [3]

Berks & Bucks were looking to get their second  win on the trot in this fixture- and start moving up the League table. On an afternoon that was decidedly wintery with showers of hail-sleet and snow-and a strong wind blowing straight down the pitch.

With Berks & Bucks kicking with the wind they started brightly- but were finding it difficult to judge the strength of the passes. Berks & Bucks were looking quick up front-& strong in defence, and Dorset were finding it difficult to make their presence felt. The visitor’s went 1-0 up in the 13th minute when a mistake by the Dorset defence, gave Nikos Chrysikopoulos  the chance to open the scoring.

For the second match running, an injury occurred to a Berks & Bucks player.  The goalkeeper Ben Murphy collided with his own defender trying to quell a Dorset attack resulting in a knee injury. An ambulance was called for-& the game was held up for almost 30 minuets. Ben was taken to hospital. Berks & Bucks had to call upon the services of a “Emergency Goalkeeper”. With much credit Berks & Bucks boy’s soon found their rhythm again, and were causing Dorset problems especially down the wings. Nikos Chrysikopoulos  got his second goal in the game making it 2-0 to Berks & Bucks.

In the second  half , with the strong wind at their backs  Berks & Bucks  were able to play some good  football – however some slack marking by Berks & Bucks midfield, gave Dorset the chance to reduce the arrears – this they took, making the score  1-2.   After this setback-again the visitors took the game to Dorset, and were rewarded with a 3rd goal, when Marcus Browne completed a good “run” to bury the ball in the Dorset net. The whistle went with Berks & Bucks well in control & deserved winners. Credit must be given to the “Emergency Keeper” who pulled of several good saves- to keep Berks & Bucks in the match. Under very difficult conditions- both teams are to be congratulated on the

way they played in this match.

BERKS & BUCKS [3] v SOMERSET [0]

After loosing the first two matches unexpectedly Berks & Bucks played to their capability today-producing a good all round performance. After early sparring by both teams- Berks&Bucks started to open up the Somerset defence. In the 10th minute Sam Ward  sustained an ankle injury- and had to go to hospital for treatment.

As play resumed after the injury- Berks& Bucks continued to pressure the Somerset

defence- and only good goalkeeping by the visitors keeper the home side from going ahead. Berks & Bucks were not to be denied however, & on 30 minutes the home side went ahead  when Nixos Chrysikopoulos produced  a “cross-come-lob” in the penalty area which looped over  the goalkeepers head. Half time arrived with the home side in command.  In the second half Berks & Bucks continued to dominate the match- with the defence dealing with any potential Somerset attacks efficiently.

Nixos  Chrysikopoulos scored his second goal of the match, an “easy tap in” after

good work down the home sides left wing- the goal coming in the 74th minute.

More pressure by Berks & Bucks resulted in going 3-0 up, when Luke Carrol broke through the Somerset midfield on a solo run, finishing with a coolly taken goal in the 79th minute.  Berks & Bucks fully deserved their win in this match- and hopefully will now go on to win other matches in the competition.

OXFORDSHIRE   4 v  BERKS & BUCKS  1

This was Berks & Bucks first match in this season’s competition – Oxfordshire having played three and won three- placing them on top of the league, both sides started well, each side looking for the early lead. Defenders on each side had to work hard, to contain the quick breaks by forwards from both teams.

However it was Oxfordshire who struck first- when they went ahead in the 7th minute from an opportunity taken by J. Ayris. Berks & Bucks continued to take the game to Oxfordshire- And equalised in the 18th minute, when Nikon Chriscotolous finished off a good Berks & Bucks move. The pace of the game continued, with both sides giving each other cause for concern. In the 35th minute took the lead for the second time-when L. Manning netted from a quick break. Half time arrived with both sides having given each other’s defence much to think about.

The second half started with Oxfordshire closing down the Berks & Bucks attacks giving the visitors midfield much less room to play in. Oxfordshire were attacking with long cross field balls, causing the Berks & Bucks defence to work overtime.

Berks & Bucks, whilst under pressure themselves, were creating chances, but were just hesitating to shoot, allowing Oxfordshire to get in a telling tackle. The strong running of the Oxfordshire midfield was beginning to stretch the visitors defence, who were having to work overtime to contain them. Substitutions were made by both sides, giving relief to players who had “done their bit “for their team. Oxfordshire continued pressure paid off in the last ten minutes when they scored two well taken goals by Paul Banks & Sam Docherty, putting them 4-1 up. Berks & Bucks never gave up in this match, and with better finishing when having the chances to shoot, may have scored more goals themselves.

Berks & Bucks can be pleased with their efforts in this match- & if they continue

to play as they did- they will win more games than they loose.

BERKS & BUCKS  1  v  GLOUCESTERSHIRE 2

An early pitch inspection, due to overnight frost, caused some concern on the pitch being playable, but due to early sun the  Referee declared the pitch fit for play.

Berks & Bucks were looking to get into winning ways after their defeat by the Oxfordshire F.A. U16 side-and stared of this game brightly- with some good passing-and putting pressure on the opponents defence.

This pressure paid of when in the 21st minute Sam Ward was able to put the Berks & Bucks 1-0 up, after a mix up in the Gloucestershire defence. Play began to get more even and in the 33rd minute the visitors equalised when they were awarded a penalty kick. Berks & Bucks were somewhat unlucky, when deep into stoppage time- Gloucestershire were awarded a free kick-which was parried by the Berks & Bucks –but the ball went back to a Gloucestershire player who was on hand to tap the ball home.

In the second half- both sides found it difficult to create many chances, and play was very even. Try as they might Berks & Bucks boys could not find that one chance to get them something from the game.

They will be disappointed to have lost their first two League games, after

the performance against Middlesex. It is to be hoped that they can find that form again in their remaining games.

Cryril Butler Memorial Trophy :

BERKS & BUCKS U16 [3]  v MIDDLESEX U16 [0]

Played at Marlow FC. Wednesday 8th  October 2008

This was the first playing of this match, to the memory of Cyril Butler a Life Member of the Berks & Bucks F.A. This Cup will be played for each season-between these two County F.A’s. on a HOME & AWAY basis. This match was due to be played on Sunday the 5th October- but due to a heavy  spell of rain, which left the  pitch waterlogged – it was hastily re-arranged for the date & time above.

This was the first match in the Berks & Bucks U16 season. And also the first match for the new management team of  Mr Alan Parris {Manager} & Mr Kevin Benning {Coach}. The match stared with Middlesex starting the brighter- and forcing  the Berks & Bucks to defend in numbers. The Berks & Bucks goalkeeper was called upon to make a couple of sharp saves which he did confidently. After the first fifteen minutes ,Berks & Bucks were starting to move the ball around sharply – moving into open spaces and creating some good flowing  football. Berks & Bucks were no dictating the game- and it was no surprise when they went into the lead- from a good move on the left –which resulted in Marcus Browne unleashing a thunderous shot- which the Middlesex goal keeper had no chance with. Middlesex  were now having to defend in numbers- to quell the attacks coming thick and fast from the Berks & Bucks side. It was no surprise when Berks & Bucks went further ahead from a “coolly” taken goal by Devon Blackman. The first half ended with Berks & Bucks well in control. Substitutions were made  by both sides at half time.

Berks & Bucks started the second half were they left off in the first- taking the game to Middlesex, try as they might, Middlesex could not break down the home sides defence –who always seemed to have another player in place to stop the attack.

The Berks & Bucks forwards were causing havoc with the Middlesex defence- who were having to work overtime to keep the score at 2-0 to the home side.

Middlesex were being restricted to playing the long ball, and taking shots from a long way out .Middlesex had a couple of corners, but these were dealt with quite easily by the Berks & Bucks goalkeeper. The Berks & Bucks boys were keeping up tremendous pace & stretching the Middlesex defence to its limits. The best move of the match came in the 75th minute of the match- when a superb four man move from the Berks & Bucks midfield split the Middlesex defence wide open- and left Nikos Chriscopolus with time on his hands to pick his spot, to make it 3-0 to Berks & Bucks.

Middlesex never gave up-but were not given much to play with by a very competent Berks & Bucks defence.  The Referee ended the match-with Berks & Bucks running out worthy 3-0 winners. The Berks & Bucks manager will be pleased with this promising all-round performance which augers well for the future. The Cup was presented   to the winning team captain Conor Southgate by Mrs Ruby Butler- Cyril Butler’s wife- in the clubhouse after the match.
