South West Counties Championship – Saturday 13th January 2007 Berks & Bucks FA 3 – 0 Army FA. Played at Buckingham Town FC
Manager Craig Adey rotated some of his squad for this League match in preparation of the FA County Youth quarter final tie against Surrey FA on 20th January. Following all the heavy rain, the pitch was in tremendous condition, and a credit for all the hard work undertaken by the clubs officials to make sure the match could go ahead.
The game opened with the home side putting the Army defence under pressure, but despite having most of the play were unable to find that first opening goal. Stafan Brown was causing the visitors numerous problems with his strong probing runs, and Tino Siragus was supporting well.
On 24 minutes the best chance fell to Aiden Lewis, who after a great run down the left, cut in but his final shot was a little disappointing and easily saved by the visiting keeper. Another good run by Lewis on 27 minutes had the Army panicking, but the resulting corner was very poor and easily contained. The best chance of the half for the Army came on 29 minutes, a great through ball by Luke Clarke set up Sean Beeks, but he was forced out wide and was unable to test Thomas Willshere in the home goal.
Right on half time Berks & Bucks open their account. Brown was again instrumental with a strong probing run setting up Siragusa, whose shot beat the advancing keeper to give the home side a deserved lead.
The second half continued as the first, with Berks & Bucks maintaining control of the match in all departments. On the hour Scott Dewar and Adam Kissane were replaced by Bradley Holt and Simon Dickenson. Holt soon got involved in the game and after a good run down the left sent in a great ball which Brown was only inches away from slotting in for a second goal. The home side did increase their lead on 66 minutes, again Brown was involved and his pass fell to the feet of Lewis, who made no mistake in scoring number 2. On 70 minutes Williams in the visitor’s goal was forced to come off through injury after bringing off a great save and forcing a corner. From the resulting kick a defensive lapse forced Todd, the Army No5, to score an own goal.
With 12 minutes remaining, the Army were forced to finish with only 10 men when their Captain, Ross, was forced to leave the field with a leg injury. The home side replaced Aiden Lewis with Charles Moone with 10 minutes of the game remaining and easily contained any threat offered by their visitors. A solid team performance but they will have to show an improvement if they hope to beat Surrey next week.
