The focus of the event on 20th March at Reading FC was ‘Developing Practice’, which focused on various practice types, the use of game-based scenarios and the benefits/trade-offs that support player development. The workshop begun with some Theory in a conference room in the Madejski Stadium, where coaches discussed the definition of a game and the definition of a practice. They also discussed the principles of play, ensuring practice involves decision making, and using language that the players understand.
One of the key take home messages from the event was linked to a quote from Steve Holland (Assistant Manager, England Men’s First Team) in 2014 when discussing creating sessions – “Don’t steer too far from the reality of the game”
The slides from the theory session can be found in the documents section at the bottom of this article
The coaches and staff then made the short walk over to the Training Dome next to the stadium, where the practical session began.
Three Reading Academy coaches delivered a session to Reading Academy players, whilst Carl and I discussed the practical activity with the coaches on the side-line.
