FEMALE FOOTBALL IN BUCKS

The FA offers a range of resources to develop football. Today we look at how you can get involved in the game by focusing on.... women's football.

Football is the top female sport in England and in the 2003-04 season the number of players hit the 100,000 mark!

There are now 101,000 girls and women playing regular 11-a-side football in England and with Euro 2005 coming to England next summer, there's never been a better time to get involved.

Buckinghamshire is home to 14 senior Ladies football teams that play in three leagues. The South West Combination, Southern Region and our very own Thames Valley Counties Women’s Football League which provides football for 19 clubs in Berks, Bucks and Oxon.

We also have a newly established Bucks Girls Football League, which is based, at a central venue in Aylesbury but clubs can play home and away should they wish. Thirty Seven teams compete for 14 clubs in the BGFL girls aged 8 – 14 years take part in 20 minute each way 7 a side fixtures.

The Bucks Girls League runs two development leagues for U10’s & U12’s these are for very new players who play friendly fixtures in a round robin format once a month.  Any new teams can join the development league throughout the season all they need to do is contact Lisa Welling on lwelling@aylesburyvaledc.gov.uk to register their side.

The BGFL is linked into the Active Sports talent programme, this allows Bucks schools and clubs in the league to nominate their best individuals to a four week informal assessment, these are held on four Fridays in November at Woughton on the Green in Milton Keynes, or four Mondays in November at Wye Valley School in Bourne End.  Successful nominees will be invited back to a 16 week coaching programme, they will still be able to play for their club but they will have opportunities to play matches against other counties development centres including Berks, Hampshire, Oxfordshire & Bedfordshire.

If you would like to nominate a player for one of our assessment centres please contact Lisa on the above address.

We are also very interested to know of any senior female footballers interested in playing recreational football, maybe indoor or 5 a side as we are keen to develop this side of the game.
