WHITLEY TAVERN RISE TO THE OCCASION -

By Bob Walter

Whitley Tavern of the Reading & District Sunday League won this year's Berks & Bucks Sunday Intermediate Cup Final, at Abingdon United ground on Sunday, with an emphatic and well deserved 4-2 victory over AFC Donsville of the Slough Observer Industrial League.

Donsville made the early running and with only 3 minutes gone, Codie Sumner put them into the lead with a well placed and clever lob shot over stranded Whitley Tavern keeper, Steven Marshall. Donsville's early domination continued but on 20 minutes, Whitley Tavern were awarded a penalty for handball by Lewis Bridges and Ray Spence converted the spot kick to level matters up. The Slough outfit, however, continued to press and Darren Russell cleared off his goal line for the Taverners after Donsville skipper, Aaron Usmani, cut in from the right.

On 27 minutes the most controversial incident of the match occurred when referee, John Barlow, awarded a penalty for a deliberate kick on an opponent by Taverners keeper Marshall. Usmani added to his team's tally by coolly slotting home the spot kick . Usmani, in fact, could have added a third five minutes later but Marshall came to the Reading's side's rescue and this proved to be a crucial miss as the game went on.

Although 2-1 up at the break, Donsville's luck ran out in the second half as Tim Swift equalised with an individual solo effort on 52 minutes, which was followed by a scrambled goal six minutes later as Spence notched up his second. The fourth goal for Whitley Taver was scored on 83 minutes as Barry Elmore rounded Donsville keeper Dave Meynell following great work by Danny Seaward. In between the third and fourth goals, Donsville's Brady Robinson was sent off for a second caution.
