Saturday Intermediate Cup

SAXTON ROVERS LEAVE IT LATE - SAXTON ROVERS 2 STEEPLE CLAYDON 1
By Bob Walter

Saxton Rovers of the North Berks League won this season's Berks & Bucks Saturday Intermediate Cup as they came from behind with two late goals against Steeple Claydon from the North Bucks League. Both sides had beaten higher graded opposition in previous rounds and the first fifteen minutes was a tense affair with no quarter given. Saxton had an effort ruled out from main striker Paul Churchouse for offside and Paul Gibbs for Steeple fired straight at the opposing keeper Darren Sayers legs on 27 minutes. Midfielders Simon King for Steeple and Danny Parry for Saxton both worked hard to make openings in the first half but everything ended all square at the break.

After the break, Parry shot wide when well placed on 48 minutes and Gibbs failed to convert from inside the penalty box a couple of minutes later.

However, on 70 minutes a long cross from the right was headed goalward by Micky Carroll and although a defender managed to clear, Assistant Referee Brad Billson ruled that the ball had entirely crossed the goal line. Saxton now sprang into life in search of an equaliser and Kevin Secker headed against the Steeple crossbar only for his colleague Chris Hooper to fire in a shot against the woodwork again. The drama then switched to the other end and with Gibbs to clean through, his shot was brilliantly saved by the evergreen Sayers.

With the game building towards a conclusion, King pushed his marker in the penalty area with less than two minutes of normal time remaining and despite the protests; Churchouse converted the penalty to even matters up. Extra-time now looked on the cards but Hooper had other ideas as his subtle flick, from Tom Aldsworth's assist, dropped agonising over Nick Bennion's outstretched hand and won the cup for Saxton in the third minute of added on time.
